Missions Overview
Our dream is that every person at Spreydon would be involved in mission - going, praying, giving or supporting in practical ways.
Global Missions at Spreydon is energised by a Global Missions Council which has eight members: Anthony Watt, Helen Lewthwaite, Steve Withington, Shirley McKenzie, Barb Harrington, Robin McKenzie, Andy Dumbleton, David van Woerden.
Anthony Watt is a member of the Core Leadership team and heads up Global Missions. Helen Lewthwaite, Steve Withington and Shirley McKenzie also work for Global Missions.
We support our people overseas through prayer and pastoral care. We cannot provide all the financial support our people need - if their work fits well with our priorities we can provide a helpful proportion of the finance they need.
At present we have 21 adults and 11 children working in poor countries overseas.
As a church we prioritise mission to people who would otherwise have minimal opportunity to hear about the good news of Jesus Christ. We acknowledge God’s heart for the poor and so prioritise mission to the poor. We also prioritise mission that equips nationals.
We encourage people to participate in short term mission opportunities, but prioritise the support of long term ministry.
We seek to provide quality pastoral care for those whom we’ve sent overseas.
Every year we have a faith goal. This amount is needed in order to support our team overseas, and to cover some travel, contribution to special projects, home end expenses and pastoral care for our people.
Each year, prior to Global Missions Week (September), we encourage everyone to pray about how much God would have them give to Global Missions during the coming year. We then ask people to fill in an anonymous slip saying how much they feel they can contribute to Global Missions during the year. These slips are placed in the offering plate or handed in to the Information Centre. We then trust God that our target figure will be reached to support our people for the following twelve months.
