WELCOME
Hi Everyone,
It’s great to be back this week!
I enjoyed a much needed break away with the family. We got away to some great spots. I think Totaranui was my favorite – lots of fun in the water and lighting camp fires whilst sipping cups of tea and eating heaps of chocolate.
I hope you all also had a good rest and if you didn’t that there’s one coming. After a big year last year we all need a good break I reckon.
Next weekend is a long weekend. We originally planned to have the Big Spreydon Family Camp then. I’m glad we decided to put it off; I’m not sure how we would have put it all together in light of all that’s happened, so a good decision. I know that the Halswell and our Barrington communities are still going to Spencer Park for the weekend, so get in touch if you live in those areas and want to join in.
Next Sunday night we are privileged to have Keith Newman coming to speak to us. He has written a widely acclaimed book “The Bible and the Treaty”. It will be a great lead up to Waitangi Day, which has come to mean much to me in recent years.
I see many of the ministries are starting up again in the next few weeks and they will be looking for volunteers. Now is a good time to think and pray about where you want to volunteer this year. It’s also a good time to think about making sure you have a relational home base for yourself here at Spreydon. We have some strong local villages emerging around Christchurch and I reckon enquiring about one now would be a great first step. Use the response form or go to the Info Centre which operates from the Media Centre at the moment.
Finally, it’s cool to see the Auditorium being done up eh. There is a bit of sadness seeing the baptism pool go - Dave Bates and I were baptized in that back in ’87! (and yes, in case you’re wondering I turn 40 in two weeks’ time). But it’ll be great to see the Auditorium freshened up and being used to celebrate our life together going forward.
Have a good week.
Cheers and nga mihi
Duane

GLOBAL MISSION
Nathan & Bronwyn Graham
Kabul, Afghanistan
“Winter is a different kind of experience in Afghanistan! Last week we woke to it being -4 degrees inside our house so we decided it was time to “winterise?. This means putting plastic over the windows (the ultimate in removable double glazing), rearranging the furniture to fit another wood burner and clearing out the chimneys. Not long after we put in the first wood burner, we heard some little scuttling footsteps in the pipes. Clearly a small animal had entered from the roof and was unable to climb back up – a sparrow! This week we cleaned out honeycomb from another chimney!
Winter also brings car trouble. We have an old VW van and the trouble can be finding the parts to fix her. This year we are hoping to find a new starter motor! It’s a good thing to drive around in an old beaten up bus. No one really gives us a second look, as most vehicles here are less than warrantable.”
COMMUNITY MINISTRY
Mercy basket
Food parcels have become a prominent ministry here at Spreydon. In the past year over 300 parcels were given out to families in our community. This did not include the many parcels given out following the earthquake in February and the 100 parcels given out prior to Christmas and over the holiday period. In each parcel a bible, budget advice and a welcome pack is included. Along with the Christmas parcels, gifts and treats were also given to each adult and child.
How privileged we are to serve people in this way - to honour them and to uplift them when they feel their lives are in tatters. In some ways it seems such a little thing but for those receiving, it is huge.
To say ‘thank you’ just doesn’t seem enough but please know that your support week by week, your monetary donations and the many gifts left under the ‘Giving Tree’ are being used to contribute life to the hurting in our community. As they are blessed, so also God blesses you.
